Dorothy Feeney Matthews (1945–2026)

Dorothy Feeney Matthews, a retired psychologist with the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and the beloved wife of the late Frank F. Matthews, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2026.

Born January 8, 1945, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Dorothy was the cherished daughter of Buena Criminger Feeney and Burla Leighton Feeney. She graduated from Duke University and earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from The Ohio State University. In 1972, she made Houston her home, where she built a life filled with purpose, compassion, and community.

Dorothy touched countless lives through her work and her gentle spirit. She was a founding member of Ligmincha Texas and served as its director for many years, sharing her wisdom and kindness with all who knew her. Dorothy was also an early supporter of Childbuilders and served on Childbuilders advisory board for numerous years.

She is survived by her sister, Margaret Mattison of South Carolina, and was predeceased by her brother, Floyd Feeney of California. Dorothy’s love extended to her family of five nieces and nephews, nine grandnieces and grandnephews, and five great-grandnieces and nephews—spread across England, California, and many states in between. Her warmth and generosity will be remembered by all whose lives she graced.

A memorial service will be held in person at Ligmincha Texas, and on Zoom on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at 2:00 pm CDT.

Frank Matthews (09/05/1942 – 08/29/2025)

Frank F. Matthews, retired Associate Professor of Mathematics and one of the founding faculty at the University of Houston–Clear Lake, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2025.

Born on September 5, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, Frank was predeceased by his parents Frank F. Matthews, Sr., and Cecelia Figas Matthews. Frank earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the California Institute of Technology, and both his Master’s in Mathematics and Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from The Ohio State University.  He inspired generations of students with his deep knowledge, accessibility, and dedication to the discipline of mathematics.

Frank was a devoted husband to Dorothy Feeney Matthews, with whom he shared a loving marriage since 1969.
